Who am I?
Rachel Falzon: newborn, maternity, children and family photographer
I’m usually the one behind the camera and sharing the gorgeous faces of my clients, but today I thought I’d share a little about myself for those who haven’t yet met me, or have recently started following me.
Obviously, I am a photographer but, first and foremost, I am a mummy. I have two small children – my daughter Ariella is a little over two years old and my son has just turned nine months old.
I have had my photography studio for a little over four years now. I began my photography journey taking landscape photographs. I would trek in the wee hours of the morning, before the sun would peek out, usually to place I’d never been before and wait for a scene to unfold infront of me when the sun rose. I adored this and it gave me a wonderful grasp of the technicalities of using a camera and reading light.
My love for photography also saw holidays take on a new meaning. We’d choose our destinations partly on what scenery it had to offer.
My background is in communications. I have a journalism degree, so telling stories is in my nature. I strive to achieve telling a story with my images and creativity is in my soul. If I’m not creating in the studio or with words, I’m creating a crazy animal out of recyclable materials Playschool-style with the kids.
When my husband and I came closer to having babies, I realised that trekking in the wee hours would be replaced by early morning feeds, nappy changes and cuddles. I’d been interested in newborn photography and children’s portraiture so took the plunge and signed up to meet Kelly Brown at one of her Sydney workshops. I spent two days watching the Master photographer at work and learned loads about safely posing babies and business in general. I was hooked and she is still a mentor to me to this day.
As my interest in portraiture grew, I took several more workshops, including one with Grand Master of Photography David Oliver and his Master Photographer daughter, Clare Oliver.
As a mother, daughter and wife, curating images of my own family is so incredibly precious to me. It’s a well-worn phrase to say that children grow so fast but it is so true. I am so lucky to be able to capture them regularly as they grow and sharing my skills with you is what I am so proud of.
Photographs become a part of our legacy. They are what we leave behind. They show who we are, our achievements, our milestones. I want my children and every client who comes through my doors to have precious memories to cherish always. I am very passionate about my clients having something to hold, a print, as part of their experience with me, so each of my packages comes with a reference print. To me, the print is half of the art.
