Newborn photography session – Frequently Asked Questions
Curious as to what to expect at a newborn photography session? Here, I outline some of the most frequently asked questions and a few tips to make the most of your session.
What can I expect in the studio on the day?
When entering my studio you will notice the temperature of the room will be warm – yes, even in summer! This is to help keep your baby comfortable and sleepy so we can quickly and comfortably move baby through a few poses. I keep a thermometer at hand at all times to ensure baby is safe at all times. Wearing cool clothing (or bringing spares) may help you stay comfortable during the session.
I will also have a number of props set up. I use our pre-session consultation and a questionnaire to help guide me in getting the props ready ahead of your shoot. If there is anything you have seen me post on social media or include on my website that you prefer, make sure to let me know so I can get it all ready for you. If you see anything you’re unsure of when you come in, just let me know and we can make changes.
Is there anything I can do to prepare my baby for the session?
You don’t need to do anything special or different ahead of your newborn session. Young babies often don’t have a routine and can feed sporadically – in fact, sometimes they feed even more during a newborn shoot as they are being handled more than usual and, of course, the room is warm.
My sessions can run for up to four hours, so there’s plenty of time for feeding and settling. Please bring along extra feeds if your baby takes a bottle and a pacifier just to help with settling during the session.
Is there anything I should bring along?
Because the sessions can run for up to four hours, I’d recommend bringing along some snacks.
If you have something special or sentimental you’d like included in the shoot, please feel free to bring it along.
Can I have family and sibling photos taken?
Absolutely! These are always included as part of my sessions. I usually start with family portraits so any older siblings can step out for a break if you wish. There are lots of great parks near my studio and a fantastic café, The Daily Break, which has an amazing outdoor play area. My clients are even treated to a free coffee there, so perhaps Dad or another adult can take the older children and have a little break.
What should I wear?
I always recommend you and your family wear neutral tones and avoid bold prints, colours and logos as they tend to distract from your faces. Neutral tones are also more likely to give your images a timeless appeal.
Do I need to bring anything for baby to wear?
I have a range of wraps, bonnets and outfits specifically designed for photography, so there’s no need to bring anything along for your newborn. However, if you have a special outfit or item in mind, perhaps something sentimental or important that you’d like to incorporate into the shoot, please do bring it along.
How long does the session run?
I put aside 4 hours for each newborn session. This gives plenty of time for settling and feeding.
How long till my photos are ready after the shoot?
Depending on my schedule, I will book an ordering session with you two to three weeks after the shoot. Once you’ve selected and paid for your products they will be ordered. Depending on what is ordered, it can take between two and for weeks to receive your products.
What payments do you accept?
At your ordering session, you can pay in cash, via card or via bank transfer. I can also arrange a payment plan, if required with an automatic direct debit. Once your items are paid in full, they will be ordered.
